Rig Revitalisation
Vessel
Galateia – 30.48 m (WallyCento class, launched 2015 by Green Marine)
Designer
Reichel/Pugh Yacht Design, in-house designers Alexia Leuschen & Antonio Costamante
Partner
RigPro (scope: boom extension)
Objective
Extend the boom by 500 mm to optimise sail plan, enhance both racing and cruising performance.
Background
Galateia belongs to the elite WallyCento class and has an impressive racing record, including victories at the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup and the PalmaVela Regatta. Reichel/Pugh Yacht Design with her carbon rig by Southern Spars and advanced systems already in place, the decision was taken to further refine her performance envelope through a targeted rig upgrade.

Scope of the RigPro Upgrade
- Boom Extension:
An elongation of the existing carbon fibre boom by precisely 500 mm, enabling a larger mainsail area and improved sail‐foot length. - Materials & Technology:
Use of high-modulus carbon laminate for the boom extension, seamless integration with existing Southern Spars boom, with reinforced gooseneck and vang attachments. - Outcome:
Enhanced performance, and better balance – beneficial for both regatta performance and luxury cruising.
Technical Details & Process
- Disassembly & Inspection
Removal of the original boom, close inspection of existing carbon work and end-fittings for fatigue or wear. - Fabrication of Extension
Manufacture of the 500 mm extension section using high-modulus carbon fibre, surface-matched to original boom finish and tolerances. - Integration
Reinstallation of the boom with upgraded gooseneck, vang, and attachments. - Engineering & Verification
Use of computational tools to design and engineer boom extension ensuring load and safety margins are maintained. Use of Ultra-Sound Testing and Inspection to verify quality of lamination.

Why This Upgrade Matters
For a vessel like Galateia, where design pedigree and competitive performance already lie at the highest level, a seemingly modest extension of the boom offers meaningful gains:
- A longer boom increases the mainsail’s foot length and thus sail area, which especially in light‐to-moderate airs improves power without requiring a larger rig footprint.
- From a stewardship perspective, a thoughtful rig upgrade prolongs the vessel’s competitive life-cycle and maintains alignment with class rules.
Summary
RigPro’s work on Galateia exemplifies what happens when high-end yacht design meets meticulous engineering. By executing a precise 500 mm boom extension on a Southern Spars rig aboard a Reichel/Pugh-designed WallyCento, the project honours time-tested design principles while delivering tangible performance uplift. Whether for race or cruise, Galateia now carries the legacy of her builder and designer into the future with even finer tuning of her sailing envelope.
